How to organize the Rivian R2 center console without losing storage

The R2 center console has a deep bin that works well for larger items, but small things such as a pen or a pair of sunglasses tend to end up at the bottom. A removable tray keeps those everyday items near the top while leaving the bin available underneath. We designed the Squared Away Console Tray for that purpose after taking delivery of our own R2.

Start with an empty console

Take everything out and return only what you want to keep in the car. Items you use every day belong near the top, while spare cables and larger things can go in the bin below. The R2 also has a separate drawer, USB ports and pop-out cupholders, so any organizer you add should leave all of them usable.

Before you buy an organizer, look for photos of it installed in an R2 and check where it sits. Some trays rest at the top of the bin, while others sit on the bottom and take up the space you were trying to keep.

Choose a layout for what you carry

We make two console tray layouts, and both are designed for the R2. The 3-compartment tray has three equal sections and a cable pass-through, which suits drivers whose everyday items change. The 5-compartment tray has separate spaces for sunglasses, a pen, cards, cash and a multi-purpose slot, along with front cable cutouts, which suits drivers who carry the same things every day.

Both trays drop into the angled console recess and rest there under gravity, so no tools, adhesive or hardware are needed, and both lift out for access to the bin below. They are printed in PETG-CF, a carbon-fiber-filled PETG, and were designed around measurements from a delivered 2027 R2. They fit every R2 trim but do not fit the R1T or R1S. Our comparison of the two layouts covers the differences in more detail.

Organize the drawer too

The drawer below the console is a natural home for snacks, gum and a spare cable, but loose items slide around every time it opens. Our Slide-Out Drawer Tray divides it into three open sections and slides in and out with the drawer, and the Console + Drawer Set pairs it with either console tray.

Check the fit with your things in place

While the car is parked, load the tray with what you normally carry and confirm the following:

  • The console lid closes without pressing on anything.
  • The tray lifts out easily when you need the bin below.
  • The drawer opens and closes normally.
  • You can reach the USB ports, and no cables are pinched.
  • The pop-out cupholders open and close.

Glasses, cases and cable connectors vary in size, so it is worth testing the tray with your own items rather than judging the fit from an empty tray.

Keep spare cables together

A small pouch in the lower bin keeps the cables you do not use every day from tangling. Your everyday cable can stay connected through the tray’s cable opening, as long as you leave enough slack to lift the tray out. If items start to pile up again, remove what you are not using so that you can always reach your sunglasses or the lower bin without unpacking the console.
