What to Get for a New Rivian R2

The first few weeks with a new R2 tend to raise the same practical questions, from where to charge to where your sunglasses should live. This checklist covers the things worth sorting out first and the ones that can wait until you plan a trip. We make the Squared Away trays, and we have linked to other makers’ products where we sell them.

Plan your home charging

Charging is the first thing to settle, because it shapes your routine from the first day. Think about where you will charge during a typical week, and if you need a home charger, find an electrician through Rivian and get a quote before you buy one. The Level 2 chargers in our EV charging collection use the NACS connector, the same charging port as the R2, so they plug directly into the car. For road trips, the LENZ CCS1 to NACS adapter lets the R2 charge at public DC fast chargers that use a CCS1 plug.

Add a front plate mount if your state requires one

Some states require a front license plate. If yours does, EveryAmp makes two mounts for the R2, the SnapPlate and the Tow Hook mount, and the maker’s installation notes explain which approach suits your car.

Choose floor mats

If you regularly bring snow, mud or sand into the car, all-weather mats made specifically for the R2 will protect the carpet. Follow the fitting instructions, and avoid stacking one set of mats on top of another on the driver’s side.

Give small items a place in the console

The R2 console is deep, and small things tend to end up at the bottom. I kept losing my sunglasses there, which is why I designed a tray that sits near the top of the console and lifts out when you need the bin below. The Squared Away Console Tray fits every R2 trim and comes in two layouts.

5 Compartments, our most popular layout, has separate spaces for sunglasses, a pen, cards, cash and a multi-purpose slot, while 3 Compartments has three equal sections for items that change from day to day. For the drawer below the console, the Slide-Out Drawer Tray keeps snacks and a spare cable in place.

If you want to organize both spaces at once, the Cargonaut Squared Away Console + Drawer Set pairs your choice of console tray with the drawer tray. All trays lift out for cleaning, and the console tray leaves the lower bin accessible.

Keep charging cables organized

Keep a phone cable in the car and store spares in a small pouch, then check that the cable is not caught when you close the console lid. Our cables and power banks collection has USB-C cables, wall chargers and portable batteries.

Assemble a few cleaning supplies

An interior cleaner, a glass cleaner and a couple of microfiber towels will handle most routine cleaning. Please follow Rivian’s care instructions, especially on the screens. We carry BLACKLINE products in our car care collection.

Review your roadside gear

Check what came with your R2 and make sure you know where it is stored before adding anything. A tire repair kit, a portable inflator and a first aid kit are sensible additions, and you can find all three in our roadside and recovery collection.

Leave trip gear until you need it

A tablet mount for the back seat, camping equipment and larger storage can wait until you have a trip in mind. If you plan to sleep in the car, measure the cargo area with the seats folded before you choose a mattress, because the HEST mattresses we sell are general camping products rather than ones made for the R2.

You can browse all R2 gear, or read our console guide to compare the two tray layouts.

The short version

Seven things worth getting first

These are the products from the checklist above, grouped by step, with prices that come straight from our shop.

  1. Console

  2. Cleaning

Reset cleans the dash, door panels and seats, and BLACKLINE lists leather, vinyl, rubber, carpet and upholstery among the surfaces it suits. It comes in several scents.

  3. Home charging

Rivian says a hardwired charger on a 60-amp circuit is the fastest way to charge an R2 at home, adding up to 38 miles of range an hour.

    Made by Autel

AC Lite Home EV Charger (NACS)

The AC Lite is a hardwired Level 2 charger with a NACS plug, a 25 ft cable and app control. Autel rates it at up to 50A, which suits the hardwired setup that Rivian recommends.

If your garage already has a NEMA 14-50 outlet, the IYILO 40A plug-in charger uses it instead, although it charges more slowly. Have an electrician check the outlet and circuit before you plug it in.

  4. Roadside

    Made by Gbruno

    150PSI Cordless Tire Inflator

This cordless inflator tops up tire pressure and shuts off on its own so that it does not overfill, and it includes a work light. R2 tires are 32 inches tall, so we left out a smaller inflator whose maker does not recommend it for tires larger than 30 inches.

    Made by MOJAB

    First Aid Kit, 151 pieces

The MOJAB kit holds 151 pieces, including bandages, gauze, gloves, an emergency blanket and a flashlight, in a bag that attaches with Velcro so it can sit within easy reach. The flashlight takes AA batteries, which are not included.
